My General Background & Interests

I am a graduate student (ABD) in the Geography Department at the University of Delaware, working toward a Ph.D. degree in Climatology, with an anticipated graduation date in August 2008. This past May I completed and passed the comprehensive exam portion of the degree requirements. As a physical geographer and climatologist, my interests within the field include synoptic climatology, geophysical fluid dynamics, cold region studies, GIS/ remote sensing, and the impact assessment & prediction of long-term climate variability and change. In my dissertation I hope to develop a better understanding of teleconnection pattern influences on intra-seasonal climate variability in North America. I also have developed an interest for short-term weather prediction and meteorology while working as a weather producer for WCAU NBC 10 in Philadelphia under chief meteorologist, Glenn 'Hurricane' Schwartz. Within the department, I  am currently working as a teaching assistant for a course titled, "Meteorology". I also am a member of the Center for Climatic Research and Synoptic Climatology Lab. In 2004 I earned a M.S. degree in Geography at the University of Delaware following the receipt of a B.A. in Geography at Syracuse University.

**Fall Semester 2008 I will begin a 1-year Assistant Professorship at Shippensburg University in the Geography/ Earth Science department in Shippensburg, PA. I will teach Physical Geography & Conservation of Natural Resources in the Fall.**

APRIL 2008  OUTLOOK: The Climate Prediction Center is forecasting above average temperatures for areas of the U.S. stretching from the Mid Atlantic, across the southeast and southern Mid West, into TX, AZ, & NM. Most of the south should also expect below normal precipitation levels this month. Forecasts for the Pacific Northwest predict below average temperatures with above average precipitation this month. The Northern Plains can also anticipate above normal precipitation.

Upcoming Events:

1)   AAG 2008 Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.

April 15-19

I will be giving a paper presentation at this conference on 4/18/08.

Paper Title: Removing Noise from the North Atlantic Oscillation Index: A New Index for Long-Term Impact Assessments

Session Title: Temporal and Simulation Analyses of ENSO and NAO (Friday, 10:10-11:50am)

Science in the News: In a recent issue of Science conservation biologists from U.C. Berkeley discuss the development of a  new system for identifying the world's greatest "hotspot" locations for biodiversity. Tested on the highly biodiverse island of Madagascar, they anticipate their efforts should help with conservation/ preservation and overall better efforts to protect species of these areas.
